Chapter 15

High Priestess Lady Sioban was furious. “You let two get away?”

Rianor was on her knees, her head bowed. “I sent four warriors after them, and the female elf was wounded.”

“But they failed! Get out of my sight; you’ll travel with Trahern on another mission. Go and prepare to leave. Pray for redemption.”

“Now Trahern, I have a new task for you. The goddess is sending a large war band of northern elves; they are marching and gathering strength as they move south toward Beinn no Callaird. Go meet them; guide them through the woods to the east of the city. Wait there; we want the city elves to think we’re going to attack from the east.”

Trahern was eager to kill humans and eliminate the weak city elves who had forgotten their heritage and turned their backs on the old ways. “Yes, My Lady. Will we have victory?”

“No, Trahern. The humans and these southern elves are too strong. This will only help weaken them for the future. We’ll sacrifice many in the coming days to Larvanis. The goddess will weaken the enemy as we gain strength and power. We’ll prepare to strike these weaklings from within. You’ll soon go and meet a warrior called Catguallaun; he leads the war band south.”

“Yes, my Lady. May the goddess protect us.” He bowed low and left thinking about how the humans and the weak southern elves would soon suffer for forsaking their culture.

Catguallaun dreamt every night of the past glories of the northern elves as the goddess showed him the visions of restored elven cities. Many others who joined the war band also had similar visions. They numbered at least ten thousand. He felt proud of these warriors who left everything behind to answer the call of the goddess. He was preparing to sleep for the night when he heard a female voice. “Don’t be afraid, Catguallaun. I’ll help you save the elves from human influence. I’ll help you lift up our people to their former glory. An elf called Trahern is coming with a priestess to guide you. She’ll help your warriors fight the humans and the elven traitors. Fight with the bravery of old and soak this sacred land with blood.”

Ginevra and the other riders were exhausted by the time they reached Mount Haven. With the help of a city guard, Ginevra rode to the Consul’s home while her companions took care of the tired mounts. It was past vespers but not yet compline by the time she knocked on the door.

“Who is it?” asked Consul Lorenz as he opened his door dressed in comfortable pants and a loose linen shirt.

“I’m Ginevra; I have two letters, one for you and the other for the High Council. This is from Captain Wilhelm Martel, and the other is from the elves of Litauia.”

“Come in and wait.” He opened Captain Martel’s letter first and read it twice. He then opened the letter from the elves.

He turned to the city guard. “I want you to send messengers to all of the captain generals and tell them to come to my house immediately.
